I come by my knowledge of money management a little differently than the MBAs and wall street hotshots that many of us have been taught to trust. I have seen markets go up and down, and I’ve had the privilege of being a surprised participant most times. I am a student of history, and I pay attention to current events. I have found it quite shocking that the people who are supposed to know these things don’t. It’s one thing for me to be surprised; it’s quite something else when it’s someone like the former Secretary of the Treasury.
My primary background is in real estate. Over the past several decades my husband and I have helped hundreds of people buy and sell homes and investment property. We have worked with hundreds of tenants. In almost of these cases we have had an intimate view into these people’s finances.
The difference between a tenant and a homeowner is usually a poor credit history and/or the absence of a down payment. We have taught people the basics of money management, and we have counseled them on strategies to repair credit problems.
With home buyers there are often things that come up that can affect their ability to get a first-class loan at a first-class rate. Generally it is better that they delay their purchase and repair whatever it is that created the problem.
With home sellers we have seen what happens when homeowners have bigger loans at higher interest rates than they can afford. I can’t begin to tell you how heartbreaking it is to sit across the kitchen table from someone who is about to lose their home to foreclosure.
In all these things, plus a lot more, I have knowledge that is worth passing on. I hope you will want to read what I write. And because I’m always open to learning new things, I hope you will comment and add your wisdom to the discussion.
